“The speed and scale at which mobile devices have become part of our society is mind-boggling.” This statement from the Topic 10 content stood out to me. When I was in high school maybe a few students would have cell phones that
were used to simply make phone calls. During my PS1 where I taught grade five, the majority of students had Smartphones. I cannot believe the progression of the cell phone and how it is used in today’s society. Cell phone now have a variety of functions which make them perfect for using in the educational setting. Along with cell phones, tablets and iPads have also increased in popularity. As an educator there are many advantages to utilizing these devices in the classroom.

I was completely amazed when I was in both my practicums. Students had access to class sets of iPads, Mac laptops and other mobile devices. Although there is much controversy around students using these in the classroom because they may not stay focused on classroom learning activities, students will benefit from their integration. There are a variety of apps that can be downloaded for students use. Because these apps are always changing and being created, teachers need to keep up to date and always be on the lookout for new ones. Students of any age have probably already used the technology at home. My nieces have been playing on my iPhone since they were three years old. I did not show them anything on using it they simply figured it out on their own. Because these devices are easy to use and there are many apps geared towards education, teachers should take note and think about how it can be integrated into their classroom. Here are a couple of links that could be useful to educators.

                Google Apps for Education

Some ways that I have witnessed tablets being used in the PE classroom involve tournament draws, creating teams, and recording students performing skills. There are apps that allow teachers to quickly and easily form groups. You simply put in the students’ names, how many groups/group members you want and then you have your groups. This saves a lot of time thinking about how to be fair and form groups. Although sometimes the groups formed may not be ideal, the teacher can start with the list and then make changes if need be. In the PE class it is common to have a tournament at the end of a unit. Traditionally teachers would need to form groups then create their own tournament draws. This quite often was very time consuming. Now apps do all the work for you. Teachers can have the tournament draw created, keep track of scores and find out winners all with one app. Finally, many cell phones and tablets are equipped with cameras which make recording student skill easy. Students will love using the technology in the class and can see immediately what they look like when performing a skill. This can also help the teacher when evaluating. Sometimes it may be difficult to see everyone in the class and recording students allows the teacher to see everyone and accurately evaluate them. One thing I would like to try during PSIII is the use of QR codes in PE. I want to create activities where students simply scan the code and then are given
instruction and/or video of what to do. There can be different skill levels with each code to ensure that every student feels comfortable and can progress at their own rate.

I think whenever technology is used in the classroom it is important for students to know the expectations. When they are aware of what is expected and know the consequences of their misuse, students will be more likely to demonstrate positive behaviours. I think the use of
devices does not replace traditional learning but enhances it. Students can receive information at the touch of their hand, be actively engaged in their learning, ask questions, and have differentiated instruction with the use of these mobile devices.

Hi Meagan,

Great post! I enjoyed reading your thoughts on this topic and found that I share some of these thoughts too. During my practicums I was also very surprised to see how tech savvy many of my students were. I think that it is great that schools are trying to incorporate technology more into the classroom by having things such as class sets of Macbooks and iPads. The one thing that came to mind when I was reading your post was, how would you incorporate technology into a school that may not have funding for the equipment? What sort of adaptations would you use to still give these students a meaningful and authentic experience with technology?

I enjoyed reading how you could use something such as a camera phone to evaluate students performing skills in PE. I think that this is a great idea. Students would enjoy doing this and it makes assessing them much easier and also saves you a lot of time.

Hi Joan,
Thanks for your comments. I think when schools do not have the funding for equipment there are still ways to incorporate technology in the class. Most students have Smartphones and if school policy permits the teacher can have them use these sources. Should students not have a phone they can work in partners. I also found this website that explains how to overcome and deal with budget issues and technology integration. https://sites.google.com/site/thedigitallibrarian/overcoming-obstacles
Thanks again for your insights.

Hey Meagan! Thanks for the links for some apps for the classroom! It is always nice to have different educational apps that we can use. I found this website taking about different nutritional apps for kids. Since you are a PE major this might be beneficial to you!

Hey Meagan,

I find it interesting my difference in thought prior to reading your post and after. I would have never thought that the use of iPads would be needed/effective in a phys ed class. However, your ideas (and Alana's comment) have changed my opinion. I do see that the use of iPads to limited to a short period of time (how long does it take to create a tournament or log your nutrition?). I think with those time frames the chances that students will be distracted is minimized. This is most likely true for all classes. The more focused and time limited the activity, the less time students have to fool around on the devices. Great read! It's given me something to think about.

Best Regards,
Dan

Hi Dan,
I am glad my post made you think. We have heard a lot about technology in our education classes and I quite often think that it would not apply to PE however I was wrong. I really like what you said about keeping students focused which will minimize the time they have to be distracted by mobile devices. Great point. Thanks again for your insights

Hey Meagan,

I really enjoyed reading your post. I also cant believe how mobile devices have become such a big part of society. I didn't get my first cell phone until High School, and it's crazy to think children in Elementary School already have one. It is the way society has changed, and we as educator need to deal with this. I agree with your comment, cell phones have many functions that are beneficial for educational purposes. They are a convenient tool that most students already have, so why no take advantage of this.
